Services at Liverpool Women’s
Every single day a number of important things happen at Liverpool Women’s. For instance, on average:
- Twenty babies are born
- Three babies are born prematurely, and are cared for in the Neonatal Unit
- Thirty gynaecological operations are carried out.
A schedule like that demands a wide range of services to act both in the front line and behind the scenes in support. The admin machinery which keeps Liverpool Women’s running smoothly works like this:
Clinical services work through four Clinical Business Units, each led by a General Manager who reports directly to an Executive and a Clinical Director (who is a senior consultant). The Clinical Business Units are Maternity & Imaging, Neonatal & Pharmacy, Gynaecology & Theatres and Genetics & Reproductive Medicine Unit, and have been created and developed in response to the specific needs of local women and their families.
General Managers and Clinical Directors sit on the Management Executive Board, which has overall responsibility for the operational management and leadership of the Trust and is accountable to the Board of Directors.
Non-clinical support services include Finance, Human Resources, Operational Services, Patient Quality and Information Management and Technology. A dedicated and specialist team manages each of these important back-up functions. Catering, domestic, portering, accommodation and security services are carried out by contractors working in partnership with the Trust.
Each month, following the board meeting, the Chief Executive delivers a team brief which is passed in turn through each directorate and department. This updates staff on developments in long-term plans and short-term activities and policies, and helps teams delivering the hospital’s services to work as effectively as possible.
