About Research and Development
Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust is committed to delivering the highest quality healthcare to women and newborn babies. An important part of this commitment is high quality research. The research carried out in the Trust makes a direct difference to healthcare. This benefits our patients and clients, and improves the way we look after them.
Research is carried out in all areas of the hospital, so patients in all departments may be asked if they are willing to participate in research. All research in the Trust has been examined carefully by independent experts and by an ethics committee.
We have strong links with academic collaborators. We share staff with the University of Liverpool and the University of Central Lancashire. We are developing links with other organisations including Liverpool John Moore’s University.
Current projects based at LWH include:
- AMIPROM: a trial that tests treatments for women who break their waters very early in pregnancy, led by Dr. D Roberts and funded by the Health Technology Assessment agency
- TIPIT: a trial about thyroid hormone in extremely premature babies performed by Dr M. Ng and led by Professor M. Weindling, funded by the Medical Research Council
- Factors that control contractions during labour: led by Dr. S Quenby and funded by the Wellcome Trust
The Midwifery Research Department at Liverpool Women’s Hospital was the first unit in the country dedicated specifically to research from a midwifery point of view, more information is available here.
The Trust also hosts the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth review Group, who conduct and publish systematic reviews of randomised clinical trials within their field of expertise. This is the most productive Cochrane review group in the world.
We work with the pharmaceutical industry on studies that directly help patients.
