About Nurse Hysteroscopist

One Nurse Hysteroscopist has been appointed to the outpatient department to work alongside the existing consultant clinics, following an intensive two year training programme based both at the Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust, and in Bradford Royal Infermary. As a result of the intensive training involved the Nurse Hysteroscopist is able to undertake diagnostic procedures, and some treatments including removal of polyps, and fitting of the Mirena Intrauterine System.

Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation TrustIf any medication is required, the Nurse Hysteroscopist can also prescribe this. Patients are advised in the information leaflet to contact the nurse should they have any questions regarding their treatment.

The training to become a Nurse Hysteroscopist was developed in Bradford in conjunction with the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The training in the UK has been very successful, and now there are over 30 qualified Nurse Hysteroscopists in the UK.

The Training Involves:

Observing 50 - 100 Hysteroscopies.

Performing 50 - 100 Hysteroscopies under the supervision of a consultant gynaecologist.

Performing 50 - 100 hysteroscopies unsupervised.

Training in histology, so that an understanding of how specimens are prepared and reported is gained.

Training in all aspects of gynaecological conditions such as menstrual problems, infertility and, gynaecological oncology.

Undertaking 10 case studies, which are submitted to Bradford University.

Final exams that are marked to either degree or masters level.

This finially leads to accreditation for three years, Nurse Hysteroscopists must keep up to date to maintain their accreditation.

Much research has been done over the last few years regarding patient satisfaction of nurse consultations. This has shown that patients are very happy seeing a nurse who can carry out the examination, diagnosis and treatment in the same way as a doctor would. A lot of women also prefer to be examined by a woman.
