Supervision of Midwives

Statutory Midwifery Supervision provides a mechanism for support and guidance to every midwife practising in the UK. The purpose of supervision being to protect the women and babies by actively promoting a safe standard of midwifery practice. Supervision is a means of promoting excellence in midwifery care, by supporting midwives to practise with confidence, therefore preventing poor practice. The Aims Of Supervision Of Midwifery:

  • Enables midwives to provide high quality care
  • To act as a 'guardian of good practice'
  • To be a source of guidance and support to midwives
  • Ensuring consistency and high standards of care are maintained
  • Empowering and encouraging midwives to provide care that is evidence based and flexible meeting the needs of individual women
