Becoming a member of the Foundation Trust
So what is a Foundation Trust?
We’re an NHS Foundation Trust. That means we’re officially regulated, assessed and approved just like any ordinary NHS trust - but we operate independently, outside of central government control. As a result, we can run the organisation in line with our members’ views and, through them, the views of our community. We can make our own decisions to respond directly to local needs, and design our services meet them. We can use any financial surpluses to develop those services, and borrow funds to invest in new initiatives – all with a local emphasis.
So, who are these members?
There are around 10,000 of them, people from all walks of life who share an important common interest: the quality of health care in their local area. As Foundation Trust members they have an important say in how we provide that care, and how we shape the future of this vital service to the community.
Can I be a member?
Anyone over the age of 12, male or female, can become a member. It won’t cost you anything, and your amount of involvement is entirely up to you. You might simply want to receive information through the ‘Foundation Express’ newsletter, for instance, or you might want to come along to events such as open days and talks, or you might even want to stand for election as a Membership Councillor. Whatever your level of commitment, you’ll know you’re doing something valuable for the welfare of local people.
What is the Membership Council?
The Membership Council represents all members of the trust and meets four times a year under the chairmanship of Mr Ken Morris.. There are 33 Councillors, who are elected by public members, staff and local organisations such as the Universities. The Council is active on many committees and focus groups and has a range of specific duties including appointing or removing the Trust’s auditor, monitoring the Trust’s performance, consulting on strategic plans, and appointing any new chairman or non-executive directors and deciding their remuneration.
