About Maternity Departments and Wards

Antenatal Clinic and Departments Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust

These areas are situated on the ground floor of the hospital, at the Grove Street entrance of the hospital. They are bright and spacious and provide accommodation for women and their families attending for their first booking appointment, specialist clinics and parent education.

Midwifery Led Unit

This area can be found on the first floor of the hospital in the Jeffcoate wing. This is where you will attend when you are in labour. All rooms are single en-suite accommodation providing a quiet private area for you and your partner to experience the delivery of your baby.

There are facilities for relaxation during labour in the snoozle room

Jeffcoate Ward

This area can be found on the first floor of the hospital in the Jeffcoate wing. This is where you will be transferred to, following a normal delivery, for post natal care. All rooms are single en-suite accommodation providing a quiet peaceful area for you to come to terms with being a new mother and spend time with partner and new baby. All rooms have television, telephone, radio, midwifery call system and facilities to store personal belongings. There is a lounge and a nursery were you can often meet other mothers.

Maternity Wards

These wards are situated on the first floor of the hospital in the middle opposite delivery suite. Maternity ward 1 is where antenatal care is given for women needing to remain in hospital. Maternity ward 2 is where women who have not experienced a normal delivery for one reason or other are transferred to from the delivery suite for postnatal care. The wards are similar in accommodation. There are several bays of 6 beds and some single rooms. Smoking is not permitted on site.

Central Delivery Suite

Central Delivery Suite is an acute obstetric consultant led care area. Providing both high risk and slow risk dependency care. Assistant and clerical staff support.

Staffing

Central Delivery suite is staffed by experienced midwives, with Health Care and clerical staff support.

Each day the Delivery Suite is co-ordinated by a Senior Midwife (shift leader) who has an overview of the area and will liaise with medical obstetric staff throughout.

All staff adhere to local policies and trust guidelines which can be accessed via the Patient Portal.

The central Delivery Suite comprises of:Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust

  • Eleven low dependency rooms
  • Four critical care rooms
  • Three obstetrics theatres
  • Obstetric Assessment area
  • Induction of labour suite

Low Dependency Rooms

All eleven low dependency rooms are equipped with intercom care facilities. Each room has access points to connect to a continuous fetal monitoring (CTG system).

Critical Care rooms

There are four large rooms designed for use in situations where women require high technology monitoring throughout labour. All with state of the art equipment.

Each room is staffed by a Midwife with access to obstetric medical staff.

Obstetric Theatres

Three theatres solely for obstetric use from Monday-Friday. An elective caesarian section list runs. Emergency caesarian sections are also performed here. Two midwives are allocated to provide midwifery care required by women undergoing caesarian section.

Their role is in addition to a full complement of theatre and recovery team.

Obstetric Assessment Area

This dedicated area is staffed by midwives with Health Care and volunteer support. Twenty four hours a day. The area consists of three beds. Assessment is for women who are referred into the hospital or who self present. There is a waiting area for relatives with toilet and refreshment facilities.

Induction of labour suiteLiverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust

This four bedded area is for women having their pregnancies induced. Approximately eight women use this room each day for booked inductions. Those women requiring emergency induction also use the room.

Midwives provide care in this area.
