Fetal Cardiac Clinic Explained
Pregnancies are referred to the Fetal Medicine Unit (FMU) with either suspected or to screen for fetal heart disease.
A fetal echocardiography (scan) will examine the structure of the heart, its rate and function.
Babies with heart disease have an increased risk of specific chromosomal anomalies. Individual risks and relevant associations will be discussed with you and any further testing offered and arranged
Specific details relating to the fetal heart disease will be discussed on an individual basis. The outcome for any baby with heart disease is dependent on a number of factors. These include:
- Is the heart disease the only problem the baby has?
- The exact structural abnormality of the heart
- Whether the baby has an associated chromosomal anomaly
Antenatal management and the best place for baby to deliver will be discussed on an individual basis.
