Amniocentesis Explained

Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation TrustThis test involves the removal of a small amount of the amniotic fluid that surrounds your baby in the womb. The baby sheds skin cells into this fluid and these can be cultures (grown) in the laboratory and the baby’s chromosomes looked at.

Reasons

  • The triple test has shown a higher risk for down’s syndrome
  • You or your family has a history of a chromosome problem
  • Your baby may have shown an abnormality on ultrasound scan
