Telephones
Sorry - we do have to ask you to keep your mobile switched off as the signal can interfere with medical equipment. But it’s easy to keep in touch - there’s a telephone at each bedside which can be used at any time between 8am and 8pm. So you can receive calls directly and, by purchasing a phone card, make outgoing calls without leaving your bed. You’ll also find payphones throughout the hospital.
For the convenience of all patients it would be helpful to limit your incoming callers to one person, who can then pass information on to other relatives and friends.
Spiritual Needs
Whatever your faith, you’ll find comfort and reassurance on hand. Clergy from any denomination are always accessible, and can visit at your request. The hospital chaplain is available 24 hours a day, and your own clergyman may visit you at any time. There are regular ecumenical services in the multi-faith prayer room, which is on the ground floor near the main reception area.
Security
Let’s face it, if there’s anywhere you should feel safe it should be in hospital. That’s why we protect patients, staff, car parks and property with a comprehensive security system backed by closed-circuit cameras. You’ll recognise all authorised staff by their clear identification badges.
Specialist Services for Patients
If you have any special needs or require help with a disability, whether you’re attending a clinic or being admitted to the hospital, we’re fully equipped to give you the right support. Simply ask a member of staff to contact our Special Advisor Jackie Rotherham. Alternatively, you can reach her directly on 0151 702 4012 or at: Jackie.Rotherham@lwh.nhs.uk.
Physiotherapy
You’ll be keen to get back into action after childbirth or an operation. Our physiotherapists are here to help. They can take you through treatments and exercises designed to ease typical post-op effects - usually on the chest, circulation and general mobility - and get you back to normal as quickly as possible.
Refreshments
Fancy a sandwich? Ready for a snack? The refreshment bar in the main reception area offers plenty of delicious options, both hot and cold. (Don’t worry if you need to stay on the ward - the regular trolley service will come to you.) And if you or your visitors are looking for a newspaper, a magazine, some flowers, a greetings card or a little gift, the shop near the main entrance has them all.
Postal Service
Phone calls and emails are great, but there’s something extra-special about a real letter. Our postal service delivers mail to and from the wards each day - just pick up your stamps and stationery from the shop or the trolley. Remember - incoming mail will get to you sooner if it carries your full name and ward title.
Going Home Transport
You’ll probably be discharged from the hospital on the morning of your departure day. If a friend or relative is collecting you, you’ll be able to arrange things easily using your bedside phone. If you need to make any alternative transport arrangements we’ll be happy to help.
